Webber Family

The story of the Webber Family migration from England to Victoria, where their legacy continues through descendants.

Elizabeth Baker nee Webber’s parents were Richard Webber & Sarah Jefferies.
Richard Webber was born at Morchard Bishop, Devonshire in 1827.  He married Sarah Jefferies 1824-1908 Bristol, at Kewstoke, Somerset. They emigrated to Victoria (Point Henry, Geelong) as sponsored immigrants on the ship Victory on 24 December 1852, initially settling around Drysdale.  They had 6 children of whom only two survived:

  1. James Jeffries born 3 Mar 1853 Drysdale. Died at Drysdale on 21 May 1862 aged 9 years. Haemophiliac.
  2. Elizabeth born at Drysdale on 27 Jan 1855.  Died Portarlington 23 Jan 1937 aged 82 years. Married George Baker – see Baker Family history.
  3. Robert born 24 Nov 1856 at Drysdale. Died 31 Oct 1860 aged 4 years. Haemophiliac.
  4. Richard born 7 Jan 1859 at Drysdale.  Died 16 Mar 1912 at Portarlington aged 53 years.
  5. Henry born 30 Mar 1861 at Drysdale. Died 7 Jul 1866 aged 5 years. Haemophiliac.
  6. David born 14 Oct 1866.  Died 26 Apr 1894 at Bendigo aged 27 years. Like 3 of his elder brothers, David was a haemophiliac. He had to wear gloves all the time and could not eat boiled lollies in case he bit his tongue. He was hit by a train door while on a visit to Bendigo and bled to death.

Richard was believed to have been Portarlington’s first butcher (noted on the back of a family held photograph (below), and referred to as a butcher at Portarlington in archived newspapers in the mid1870s. He died at Portarlington in 1886 aged 59. Susan died at Portarlington in 1909 aged 85.
